Cattle exports take a 26.5% dip
WINDHOEK - Despite severe drought conditions, cattle exports declined considerably by 26.49 percent in the first quarter of the year due to weak demand for weaners by South African feedlots who were adversely affected by Foot-and-Mouth Disease-related trade restrictions. Since weaner exports are a leading contributor to the sector’s performance, their decline greatly influenced an overall weak performance.

Development Budget: Hardap allocated over N$284 million for regional development
WINDHOEK – The Hardap Region had been allocated N$284.7 million for the development budget during the 2019/2020 financial year. As tabled in the national budget by Minister of Finance Calle Schlettwein, in March this year, the Hardap Region’s development budget is expected to decrease slightly to just under N$260 million in the 2020/21 financial year, before rebounding to more than N$282.3 million in the 2021/22 financial year.

Sluggish economy keeps property prices subdued in early 2019
WINDHOEK – Residential property prices continued to contract during the first quarter of 2019, like they have done since 2018. This is according to the latest FNB House Price Index which recorded a contraction of one percent at the end of March 2019, compared to a contraction of 0.3 percent over the same period last year. Overall, the property market remains lacklustre, as the price index continues to hover in a negative territory.

Omuthiya tables pro-poor budget
OMUTHIYA - Despite a reduction in the 2019/20 financial year budget that was reduced by 13.94 percent from N$59 million to N $50.8 million, Omuthiya Town Council in what it termed as a pro-poor budget has decided to maintain water tariffs at N$15 per cubic metres for low-income earners in Kaniita informal settlement and other low-income areas.
