A 66-year-old man from Oniiyagaya village in the Oshikoto Region was arrested on Monday in Omuthiya for drinking and driving as well for culpable homicide after he hit and killed a pedestrian at around 16h00.

According to Oshikoto’s Regional Crime Investigation Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Naomi Katjiua, it is alleged the driver of a white Toyota pick-up, with registration N3642EN, was under the influence of alcohol when he hit a pedestrian on the pavement.

The deceased was severely injured and eventually succumbed to his injuries after two hours of hospitalisation in the Omuthiya State Hospital. The suspect will appear in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court today.

The deceased was identified as 79-year-old Samuel Namwandi from Onashikuvu village in Omuthiya. His next of kin have been informed. In other news, heavy rainfall accompanied by storms that deluged the Oshikoto Region over the weekend have left one person dead.

A 22-year-old male died on the spot on Saturday after he was struck by lightning at Okolo in Nehale Lyampingana Constituency. The deceased’s body was taken to the Tsumeb mortuary for a post-mortem. The deceased, who was in his house at the time of the lightning strike, was identified as Jesaya Kondjashili Lucas. His next of kin have been informed.

Still in the Oshikoto Region, a 48-year-old male suspect from Onyaanya shot his cousin once with a shotgun in the head and left leg. The incident happened last week Thursday at around 21h00.

A case of attempted murder was opened against the suspect and he appeared in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday. It is alleged the suspect had shot his 42-year-old cousin, Ester Nelumbu, after quarrelling at the home where they both reside. It is not yet known what had sparked the quarrel. Katjiua said the victim was still in a critical condition in Onandjokwe Hospital.
