Urban constituency councillor and Veterans Affairs Deputy Minister Hilma Nikanor has called for a united Swapo with a common goal. She was speaking at a Swapo //Kharas regional executive committee meeting held at the party’s regional head office on Saturday.
Nikanor said the issue of unity among party members should not be taken lightly and personal interest should never be put before the common interest of the party. “Putting personal interest first is an offence. The issue of unity should be taken seriously,” she said.
She urged the party members present to work together as a united people with a common interest and goal, with the aim of winning the regional and local authority elections slated for November.
She further explained the importance of the November elections, saying that oftentimes people tend to think that the presidential and national assembly elections are the most important and thus take their foot off the accelerator in terms of mobilising people to go and vote.
Nikanor said the upcoming elections are equally important and committed party members should strive to ensure the ruling party does even better than it did in the presidential and national assembly elections.
“There are some towns where Swapo is not represented and what a painful thing it has been for our people,” she said. She then called on members to go all-out, even door-to-door and mobilise people to register so they are eligible to vote come November.
Nikanor also urged members not to be left in the dark about government programmes, but rather to take ownership of government programmes and monitor their progress, as these are derived from the Swapo manifesto. As such it is the duty of party members to ensure they are implemented.
“We own this government, we own this country and you should be the ones to make sure that the Swapo manifesto is implemented properly,” she stressed.
Swapo’s regional coordinator for //Kharas, Matheus Mumbala, in his short statement about the party’s preparedness for the upcoming elections, indicated that 95% of the regional structures are in place. He said good results are expected due to the hard work they are putting in.
Mumbala said //Kharas Region is geared up for the upcoming municipal elections. “We have no fear of those political projects roaming around,” in reference to his rivals, adding that he was confident the Swapo party would do well in that region.
He thanked everyone present for their involvement and willingness to take on the completion of tasks outside their comfort zones and called on them to refrain from infighting, so that they can achieve the necessary unity to ensure a landslide victory in all local authorities.
