The Government has distanced itself from reports in a local daily regarding Namibians with military, police or security experience who may want to serve as security guards in war-torn countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

In a statement issued to the media yesterday, Information and broadcasting Minister, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, said although the report claims that Namibians will only be allowed to leave for training in Iraq with the blessing of the Namibian Government, the Government has not received a formal request in this regard.

A local daily carried the story earlier this week, in which it was alleged that the first group of war veterans, from both sides of the liberation struggle, are expected to get permission from the Government to receive training in security services in Iraq.

The article stated that the exercise was part of an earlier agreement reached between a Namibian branch of a South African Labour Hire company, African Personnel Services (APS) and an American company SOC-SMG.

According to the article, US$600, or about N$4???_?_’???_?’???_???
