Simeon Kamati, 18, who allegedly shot and killed a 92-year-old woman at Onelago in July last year was declared unfit to stand trial after psychiatric evaluation found that he cannot comprehend court proceedings.
Kamati was charged with murder and sent for mental observation last year.
Kamati, who appeared before magistrate Simasiku Makapa, did not dispute the psychiatric report and recommended the man be admitted to a mental hospital.
The psychiatric report brought before court says Kamati suffers from a mental disorder and that he was receiving psychiatric treatment before the attack.
Simeon is said to be a neighbour to the 90-year-old Sabina Shilomboleni, whom he killed on that fateful day.
Villagers at the time said Kamati has been complaining that Shilomboleni always verbally abused him when he passed by her house.
“The suspect mentioned that every time he passed by the old woman’s house she insulted him with reference to his mother,” said the head of operations in Oshana Region, Deputy Commissioner Karel Theron at the time.
The suspect allegedly stole his uncle’s shotgun with which he proceeded to the homestead of Shilomboleni.
The suspect then hid behind one of the huts. He shot Shilomboleni who was pounding mahangu at the time.
Shilomboleni died from a single bullet wound.
Kamati is said to have fled the scene, but the murder weapon was later confiscated by a villager.
Prosecutor Petrine Hango represented the state, while Kamati was represented by Pieter Greyling of Jan Greyling and Associates.
