WINDHOEK – Deputy Police Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi announced yesterday during a media briefing that 42 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Windhoek over the weekend.

The 42 were all arrested over the weekend. According to Kanguatjivi those arrested include prosecutors, senior government officials, some politicians and students. The arrests were outcome of joint operations between the Namibian Police and the Windhoek City Police carried out in Katutura and

Khomasdal according to Kanguatjivi. All the suspects who had a sobering experience are expected to appear in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court in Katutura today. Pay weekends have become notorious for excessive drinking. In other news, Kanguatjivi said 24-year-old Helmut Tjipura committed suicide on Saturday at about 07h00. Tjipura was found hanging from the roof of a shack on Kawasaki Street in Otjomuise. No suicide note was left behind and police do not suspect foul play. It was also reported that an off-duty prison warder was robbed at gunpoint as he was walking from Liyeta to Babylon. He was allegedly approached by two men armed with a pistol and robbed of his property including shoes, shirt and N$3 800. Three Brahman cattle worth N$15 000 were allegedly stolen by two suspect aged 22 and 20 years. However, the police recovered the cattle and the suspects have been arrested. The alleged theft happened at Okakango Kombonde cattlepost on Friday. The suspects are expected to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court today. A 33-year-old suspect was arrested at Okatumba Komasa location in Kamanjab for allegedly raping a 26-year-old female on Saturday at about 04h00.  The suspect will appear in the Kamanjab Magistrate’s Court today.

A 23-year-old suspect was also arrested at Noordoewer after he allegedly stole the keys of an ECN vehicle from his supervisor’s room and got into an accident. It is alleged the suspect was involved in an accident with a white Toyota Camry with registration number GRN 1809 and damaged it extensively. A case of reckless and negligent driving and driving a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license was opened and the suspect will appear in the Noordoewer Magistrate’s Court today.

Also, a man died on Saturday after he allegedly went to assist his neighbour in killing a brown Kapel snake. It is reported that after killing the snake 43-year-old Benedictus Matroos went home without realising that the snake had bitten him. He allegedly died while his wife was busy trying to take him for medical treatment. Cattle valued at N$114 000 were allegedly stolen at Farm Dikdoring in the Schlip district. It is alleged the suspect(s) cut the fence of the farm and chased out 19 head of cattle on January 28. None of the animals were recovered and police are investigating the alleged stock theft.
