WINDHOEK – I am a graduate from the College of the Arts in Windhoek where like many other youth I studied for a Diploma in Media.
Presently I am on internship at New Era newspaper for three months where I am receiving on the job training on how to write for print media.
I am doing everything from current affairs to entertainment.
During my first week at New Era things were awesome. On my first day I was a nervous wreck because I didn’t know what to expect and how to do things their way. My first day in the newsroom did not go as planned as I did not have a story idea.
I came to the newsroom unprepared and my colleagues were helpful saying I will soon come up with a good story idea. Despite all this I am very excited to be here.
The newsroom is a good start as it makes you think the reason for brainstorming. I truly like that. They help you to go in the right direction and they encourage you.
The editors lift you up and that’s what I like about the newsroom. You never run out of story ideas.
The morning newspaper postmortem and the brainstorming for the next day’s edition is powerful. Corrections as, the editors dissect your copy comes in handy and this ensure we get it right the next time around.
Since my initial anxiety I am becoming more familiar and relaxed with my new environment.
People in the newsroom are welcoming and they don’t make you feel like it is your first day but they make you feel like you have been working with them for a very long time.
Working with them is a good experience and it brings a sense of unity and belonging.
The deadlines are fine and everyone here is hardworking and they make sure that their stories are submitted before moving to another story. That inspires me a lot. I would also like to do that, to be on my toes and not to be late or delay my stories.
Working hard is my aim.
They have taught me new things and I think there is still a lot to learn.
I am striving to be a good journalist and I want to learn more because I want to become a journalist who reports factually and meets her deadlines without compromising my facts.
